Slovak as a Foreign Language

The Institute for Language and Academic Preparation for Foreign Students (Utvar jazykovej a odbornej pripravy, or UJOP), founded in 1960, is specialized in teaching Slovak as a foreign language, and provides Slovak language courses for international students at various proficiency levels. The institute is a central part of Comenius University in Bratislava, and is the only school in Slovakia that provides Slovak as a foreign language course. It prepares international pupils for their study at higher education institutions in Slovakia.

System of Testing and Assessing Slovak Language Proficiency is the project of the institute that determines the requisites for proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing, as per the European standards formed in the Common European Framework of Reference. This project was formed January 2002 – March 2003 and provides ways and means of evaluating the language levels—A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. 

The Slovak language proficiency exam was first held in June 2003.

Levels of Proficiency

Level A2- Waystage or Elementary

This level indicates that candidate can understand and use expression in everyday communication and routine tasks. Also, candidates can explain in simple terms facets of his/her background, surroundings, etc.

Level B1- Pre-intermediate Level

This level requires candidates to be a part of conversation, exchange dialogue, solve a problem-oriented social situation, communicate using simple sentences, ask and answer questions. Vocabulary to convey daily thoughts and communicate in everyday situations is required. To attain this level, 300 to 400 hours of study is needed.

Level B2- Intermediate Level

This level requires candidates to take part in conversation on wide range of themes, communication easily in the language, perform daily task and handle social situations, ask questions and answer them.
This level is required in order to gain admittance into the study programs taught in the Slovak language by higher education institutions in Slovakia. To come to this level, 700 to 4800 hours of study is needed.

Level C1- Upper-intermediate

This level requires candidates to master day-to-day situations at work, home or school. At this level, candidates must be able to complete complicated tasks and handle social situations or events easily. To come to this level, 1000 to 1200 hours of study is required.

Level C2- Advanced Level

This proficiency level requires candidates to communicate spontaneously and fluently at work. The candidate must be able to continue formal as well as casual conversation on professional, practical, abstract and social matters/themes. This level indicates that the level of proficiency attained in the Slovak language is near to a native speaker's proficiency level. 

Registration

Candidates must fill out an application form that can be downloaded from the official website of the Institute for Language and Academic Preparation. Candidates must state the level of proficiency they want to appear for in the application form.  After the institution receives the application, a confirmation will be sent to the respective candidates. The confirmation letter will have exam details, such as time, exam fee payment methods, venue, etc.

Results 

Result is declared within 30 days of the exam.

Certificate: Candidates who pass the exam on an appropriate level are given a certificate that proves the Slovak language proficiency. The certificate is valid in the European Union (EU).
